COURSE DESCRIPTION
The EP Agent’s Ultimate Super Power
Imagine having the power to see into the future and change the outcome of a face to face encounter BEFORE it escalates into a violent attack. As an executive protection agent, there are very few skills or abilities that could be of higher value to have or of greater consequence not to have.
Introducing Tactical Communication – The Art and Science of De-Escalation
Professionals train to function and perform in high intensity situations without their skills breaking down. In order to effectively resolve conflict, an agent must be well trained to recognize, identify, and manage the the signs of aggression that a person may demonstrate prior to an attack. Initially designed for law enforcement officers and mental health professionals dealing with potentially aggressive individuals, this course has been specifically developed for the executive protection professional. This course provides a comprehensive overview of the physical, psychological, and behavioral indicators of aggression and the tools to mitigate them face to face.
Avoid the pain of knowing you could have prevented a violent encounter, but failed to identify the signs or failed to act in time.
The Tactical Communication training modules are structured and presented to provide you with specific tactics and strategies for reading behavior to determine a subject’s intentions and make immediate decisions to protect yourself, your team and your principal from a potential attack.
- Modules include:
- Recognizing patterns of aggression
- Developing your intuition
- De-escalation of self – Posture, breathing, eye contact, mannerisms
- Tactics to de-escalate angry subjects
- Chemical overdose/withdrawal
- Mental illness – psychosis/mania
- Stalking
Beyond the Obvious
As a protection professional, by definition your job entails putting yourself between your client and potential danger. When that danger takes the form of an angry or aggressive individual, it is critical that you be able to rapidly assess the situation, and respond immediately to de-escalate to avoid violence if at all possible. However, the value of Tactical Communication, applied more broadly, can make you a truly indispensable member or leader of your team or organization. Think about it – virtually everything you do on a day to day basis comes down to how you interact and communicate with the people around you. Conflict can arise with your client, with other agents within your team, anyone else you encounter personally or professionally. The skills to control your attitude and tone of voice, your ability to embody calm power, are imminently relevant to maintain composure and make sound decisions amidst conflict. There is perhaps no more valuable, more broadly applicable skill for the protection professional.

Ellis Amdur’s work focuses on communication specific for first responders to calm and control people manifesting mental illness and emotional disturbance, particularly those who are exhibiting potentially dangerous behaviors. He has released eighteen profession-specific instructional books, some written with subject-matter-expert co-authors concerning communication with seriously mentally ill individuals and verbal de-escalation of aggression (www.edgeworkbooks.com) Amdur is part of an innovative collaboration between himself and Sergeant (ret.) Don Gulla, a renowned defensive tactics instructor. Through their training, which encompasses the full range of force options, from conversation, de-escalation, verbal control, and hands-on tactics from physical restraint through firearms, they prepare professional for real life encounters which are unpredictable and change from one level to another in a heartbeat. Ellis and Don’s viewpoint can be summed up as follows: one should never give up on an attempt at peaceful resolution through verbal de-escalation tactics, and at every moment, one should always be prepared to defend one’s own and others’ lives by the best tactic available.
